Annex V of the Marpol Treaty

Please be advised that it is illegal to dump anything overboard in Puget Sound and that the three to twelve nautical mile regulations refer to offshore, west of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Captains violating the requirements of the MARPOL TREATY may face civil penalty up to $25,000 or a fine up to $50,000 and up to 5 years imprisonment.

VESSELS 26 TO 40 FEET

All vessels over 26 feet must display, in a visible location to all crew members, a durable placard describing the restriction of Annex V. The Captain or person in charge should advise passengers of the location of trash receptacles and mention the refuse discharge regulations. (Placards are readily available at marina stores and chandleries.)

VESSELS 40 FEET AND LONGER

All vessels over 40 feet must also have written waste management plans, which must include the name of the person in charge of the vessel, procedures used for collecting, processing, storing and discharging the vessel’s garbage in accordance with the requirements. The Captain or person in charge should advise passengers of the location of trash receptacles and mention the refuse discharge regulations.
